Halal Recipe for  Koeksisters
 

Koeksisters is a typical African donut wrapped in sugar water or honey. 

Koeksisters is a little bit similar to the food called Vetkoek. The difference here is that Koeksisters is smaller when compared to Vetkoek food. Koeksisters is a type of fried snack which is then covered with syrup and it can also be liquid sugar. To want to taste it, it's best to eat it cold.

Halal Recipe for  Koeksisters

Ingredients for making donut dough:

  •     1 1/2 cups of wheat flour
  •     1 cup cornstarch
  •     2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  •     35 grams of butter
  •     3/4 teaspoon salt
  •     2 tbsp sugar
  •     1 egg
  •     The oil for frying


Ingredients for making sugar syrup:

  •     2 cups sugar
  •     1 tsp finely chopped ginger
  •     2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  •     1 cinnamon stick
  •     1 1/2 cups water
  •     1/4 teaspoon salt


How to make koeksisters:

  1. Put sugar, ginger, lemon juice, cinnamon, water and salt in a saucepan. Boil over medium heat for 10 minutes then stir until the syrup thickens then turn off the heat and put in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  2. Combine flour, cornstarch, sugar, salt and baking powder then stir until smooth. When it's flat, add an egg followed by butter.
  3. Mix all the ingredients then knead the dough until it is soft and not sticky on the fingers.
  4. Cover the dough then let stand for 1 hour so that it expands
  5. Roll out the dough to a thickness of approximately 1 inch then shape the dough into a braid shape or desired shape.
  6. Prepare the oil in a frying pan then fry the dough over medium heat until golden brown.
  7. If it is cooked and browned, drain the donut then dip or flush with sugar water air
  8. Koeksisters ready to serve
